It’s a question.
A question that sparked both Nelena and Niley (and some Nourtney) fans everywhere. 

My opinion?
It’s all Nelena.

We all know that things weren’t so perfect with Nelena when they first started. They started out as a lie. Not a lie in the sense that they never happened, but a lie in the sense that they denied that they happened. Disney didn’t want their relationship public because it would look bad for the ‘Disney’ name. There were even fans that said they ran into Nick and Selena together back then, but Selena wasn’t allowed to take pictures with them. Why else would she not be allowed to take pictures? Because it would start a riot within Disney fans. Well sadly, Nelena didn’t last long and Nick tried to ‘reconnect’ with Miley and he did, but only in a sense of friendship. Lately, we’ve been noticing Nelena. Proof of their rekindled friendship occured in December on a Christmas vacation to Texas. Out of nowhere, an actual photo of Nelena surfaced. So it brings me to the first line of ‘Stay’; “It’s hard to believe where we are now.” Nelena went through hell and back. They’re friendship deminshed, they constantly lied about their relationship because of the media, and Selena actually came to the point of possibly hating him for hurting her, but after connecting in Texas, it seems that Selena has put some of that behind her. Nick is basically saying that he never thought the day would come where they would be on ‘okay’ terms, let alone spending time with each other. The keyword in that first sentence is ‘now’. Nick is speaking in present tense; meaning this is just occuring and it’s quite a coincidence that Nick writes this song AFTER he invites Selena to his first concert. Selena was there supporting Nick even after he hurt her and even if he didn’t deserve for her support, but Selena was still there for him. She was basically there holding his hand. Sound familiar? “Your hand in mine, Baby, feels right somehow.” We can clearly see the obvious in a physical sense, but let’s dig deeper. A hand…a means of support. When you’re down, a helping hand is there for you. When you’re afraid, a hand is there to comfort you. Remember, we’re still speaking in present terms. Who has been around Nick recently? Selena. She’s been holding his hand through this new journey in his life and he’s acknowledging that. He feels her support, he feels that she cares, and he’s loving that. 

Of course, one will naturally be afraid to lose such a strong sense of support through all the chaos that’s going on in their life. Nick’s new project has come fast and come hard. I’m sure he didn’t expect it to be such a great success, even with the Jonas name attached to it, and it’s kind of like a whirlwind for him. “The night is so still, so don’t make a sound. ‘Cuz it’s almost perfect, so Baby, don’t turn around.” With all the mess going on around him, he’s found a piece of security. A moment or world where something is realistic to him, where he’s escaped all the noise around him. “The night is so still, so don’t make a sound,” he’s afraid that now that he’s found that comfort, it’ll be taken away. “Cuz it’s almost perfect, so Baby, don’t turn around,” he’s afraid she’ll be the one to take that comfort away because he knows that she has every right to protest against him. Nick’s aware of the pain he inflicted on her, hense the verse, “We had our past,” but he wants her to “leave that behind.” Knowing that Selena may never forget the pain he put her through by using her, he’s hoping that this time he can mend her broken heart. “Cuz girl, love…it lasts,” meaning he knows that somewhere deep inside of her she’s still hurting because she still loves him and that she should take the opportunity to forgive him because time is very limited in their fast paced world and “all that we have is tonight.” Again, Nick is speaking in present terms. 

“You’re not the only one who’s ever felt this way,” Nick knows the pain he inflicted on Selena because he once lived it. He was once in love too and the girl he loved moved on to another man, just like Nick did to Selena. He had Selena fall in love with him while he was still in love with someone else. Selena felt used, just as Nick’s love felt used by Miley when she moved on. Nick feels Selena’s fear because he lived that too as well. She’s afraid of being used and rejected again, but Nick’s trying to convince her not to be afraid because with a new year comes new beginnings and his ever famous ‘the year of no fear’. So Nick is pleading to stay in that world they created; the one where there’s comfort in reality and he doesn’t want to lose the feeling of something real. That is why he says, “Don’t let my world cave in, just tell me that you’ll stay.”

“Now that the pain is gone, no need to be afraid,” Nick is talking about the hurt, lies, games, and actions that were taken in their whole situation, but they have both matured and become stronger people. They’ve recovered from hurtful experiences and now there’s no reason to fear because he’s felt the pain she’s felt and he doesn’t want to put her through that again. Now, “We don’t have time to waste, just tell me that you’ll stay,” again, he’s fearing that she’ll leave. That somehow he’ll get pulled out of that world he’s in and the only way to stay in that world is if she agrees to give him another chance. 

“Beautiful. One of a kind,” Selena is a beautiful person, not only externally, but internally as well. She has a heart of gold; she helps out hungry children and dogs. Her mind and spirit haven’t been corrupted with the fame, unlike a lot of people in Hollywood. She still hasn’t forgotten her roots and all the hard work she’s put into her life. Selena is one of the humblest young stars in Hollywood and Nick sees that. “You’re something special, Babe, and you don’t even realize that you’re my hearts desire,” Just the person she is makes her unique to his eyes and heart. He’s drawn to her for who she is. Selena once changed herself for Nick, but from what it seems that isn’t what Nick wanted. He wanted HER. The real Selena and now that she’s found herself again, Nick has grown to know and love the person she truly is and his desire for her is “unwilling anymore” meaning he can’t control it, even if he tried. Now we get to the line that just screams Nelena, “I know you’re scared, but I promise, Babe, I’m not who I was before.” Nick HAS change and so has Selena. They were both kids when they first got together and they honestly didn’t know anything about love or life. As you grow older, you learn to differentiate between many things. Things you thought and believed strongly about when you were a kid aren’t the same as they are when you grow up. Selena has every right to be afraid, but Nick is trying to convince her that he’s not the same guy from before—-the one that used her. How does that line scream Nelena? Well, Miley has no reason to be afraid. Aren’t they already friends? And isn’t she with someone else? Remember, Nick recently wrote the song and it’s directed to someone who is battling with some internal feelings. If you ask me, Miley looks perfectly happy with Liam. She’s not battling any internal feelings, unlike Selena who has recently fixed her friendship with Nick and is still working on trusting him. 

So, that is MY interpretation of ‘Stay’. 
Also, I believe this song is about Selena because why else would she break down that wall she built up in the last year and cry during his performance of ‘Stay’? People don’t cry over songs unless it’s personal to them. Why else would Nick get so emotional on stage? They’re both battling these feelings. Nick is falling in love with Selena and afraid she’ll leave and Selena loves Nick, but is afraid of getting hurt again. If you ask me, they’re both afraid, but Nick is acting on his new motto “the year of no fear” and putting it all on the line.

We’ve all heard the news that Nelena has been spotted together the past few days. On January 16th she was at his Detroit concert where she reportedly cried during his performance of ‘Stay’. Many people have been speculating who inspired the song and from the looks of Selena’s emotional response to it, it seems like it’s very personal to her. Fans reported that she was “crying into her hands and shaking her head while Papa J comforted her.”

So, now comes the question…what really is going on with Nick and Selena?

This has set off alarms everywhere. It even got to the point where Nelena because a trending topic for the first time on twitter.

It’s quite apparent that they’ve become friends again and that’s great, but sometimes it feels like they’re heading for something past friendship. None of us can be really sure of that, so we’ll just let things take their course.

I have NEVER seen this boy sing with so much passion!!! Whoever this song is about (Selena?) has Nicks heart in the palm of her hand. Watch till the end. He just sits on the ground for like 15 seconds. Its amazing. Im so proud of him

It’s good to know the family loves her, but who wouldn’t?! She’s a sweetheart. This is just another confirmation that Selena was at Nick’s concert last night. So all those who are anti-Nelena can stop hating on the girl. Stop being so immature and accept the fact that Selena and Nick are friends…or possibly more. Nick has every right to be with who he wants to be.

Those who aren’t blind, saw how much Nick looked up at the balcony and why else would he do that? Answer: Selena Gomez.
